Yakima Area Residents Finding Success Through Charter College

More than 100 students earned degrees or certificates at the Charter College graduation, held at the Yakima Convention Center on September 29, 2017.

Student speakers Mariza Garcia (Medical Office Administrative Assistant Certificate & AAS in Allied Health) and Jennifer Clark (Certificate in Medical Assistant) spoke about their journeys before college and how Charter College changed their lives. They, like many of our students, overcame obstacles and challenges to accomplish their career goals.

Carlos Luna (HVAC) and Jami Olson (MA) were both recognized with Student Awards to honor their perseverance, sacrifice and exemplifying the characteristics the college believes are necessary to excel in their professions.

All four graduates are now working successfully in their fields.

“Twenty-plus years ago I started a career in nutrition and thought that’s what I would retire from, but then my job was devastatingly eliminated. I was 53 years old and that was the only thing I knew,” Olson shares. “The silver lining is that I found Charter College. Within hours of calling the school, I was talking to someone who helped prepare me to go back to school. And it’s been like that every step of the way. Katrina, my Career Services Representative, helped me update my resume and apply for the job I have now. Even after graduation, she’s still there supporting me and she said she would be there for me in a year when it’s time to transition to a different position here.”

“We aren’t your traditional college where you’re just another student in a class, and another paper being graded,” said Campus President Daisy Mendoza. “Here you’re a member of our community and from the first time you walk in, we take the time to get to know you.”
