Your first impression can make a lasting impression. And when you’re looking for a job, it comes from your resume. A well-crafted healthcare resume can highlight your knowledge, training, and experience. It can get you noticed, open doors, and land you an interview. Is yours the best it can be? 1. Healthcare Training and Education

Whether you apply for a position as a nurse, healthcare administrator, or health information specialist, you need to demonstrate that you possess the required knowledge to do the job. Make sure to note where you got your education and any honors you may have received. Your course work taught you about the healthcare delivery system, proper medical terminology, and the laws and ethics that guide the industry. You probably learned about patient care and the importance of critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication. Where and how you were trained can give employers an idea of how prepared you are to work for them.

2. Healthcare Career Experience

If you already have some experience in the industry, be sure to place it prominently on your resume, starting with your most recent position. The experience you include might be similar to the new job you want. Or you might include what you learned from an externship, internship, clinicals, or through relevant volunteer positions. Even if you don’t have actual healthcare experience, there are probably jobs you’ve had that taught you transferable skills. For example, if you want to work as a pharmacy technician and have worked in retail, be sure to list responsibilities such as handling the cash register or providing great customer service.

3. Healthcare Licensures and Certifications

Before you can start a specific healthcare career, you might be required to apply for licensure or certification in certain states. For example, Washington requires all medical assistants to certify and register with the state. Other careers, such as nursing, require you to pass a national exam before you can practice. Be sure to list any licenses or certifications that you may have earned through your training program. Without them, an employer might pass you over.

4. Relevant Healthcare and Medical Skills

To succeed in any healthcare position, you should be familiar with medical terminology, have a good set of computer skills, and know how to update medical records. But to land the job you want, you need skills that match the position. For example, if you want to work in medical billing and coding, you should be familiar with the industry coding manual and the software used to track and submit insurance claims. If you want to work in phlebotomy, you should list the different types of blood draws you know such as venipuncture, fingerstick, and arterial sampling. And if you have an interest in medical assisting or nursing, patient care should be at the top of your skills list. And don’t forget about soft skills: communication, teamwork, organization, time management, and attention to detail are all important skills for healthcare workers.
