When it comes to landing the job you want, a good interview strategy is what you need. To set yourself apart from the other candidates, it isn’t enough to be polite, dress well, and answer the questions. So, how do you turn an interview into a job offer? With these interview tips, you can go above and beyond to show the employer you’re the right person for the job.

Do your homework. Before the interview, research the organization. Review their website and use LinkedIn to find out who works there. This preparation will give you the confidence you need to really shine. It’s normal to be nervous during an interview, but if you prepare ahead of time, you can make a good impression. A calm and confident applicant means a reliable employee who can handle stressful situations.

Offer something the employer can’t resist. Everyone has something unique to offer. Highlight your strengths and how they will actually benefit the organization. Share your unique skills and experiences and how you can successfully apply them to the position. Use specific examples from your past that verify what you’re saying.

Show your excitement. Be enthusiastic and show the employer you’re ready and eager. Make sure that your enthusiasm is genuine. Don’t be afraid to show your personality and passion. This will set you apart from other applicants who might just be going through the motions – arriving early and asking questions.

Pause before answering. Take time to really think about the question and answer it to the best of your ability. If you’re nervous, you might answer the question too quickly. Listen carefully, take a deep breath, and give yourself a few seconds to think about how you want to respond. These few seconds will make your answer polished and concise.

End on a good note. When you leave, smile and firmly shake hands with the interviewer. Don’t forget the value of a thoughtful thank you note. The interviewer took time out of the day to meet with you, so show your appreciation. This follow-up is your last chance to highlight the valuable traits you have to offer!

An interview is your opportunity to make a lasting impression. Of course, you’ll want to dress the part and bring copies of your résumé, but it’s the little things you do that make a big difference.
