In addition to a good education, there are a few things you need to build a successful career. Here’s how to lay a solid foundation for your future:

Set Goals
If you don’t know where you’re going, how can you get there? Set goals for yourself and establish realistic steps to achieve them. Goals, both big and small, put you on the right path. A short-term goal such as personal deadline to complete an assignment can help you accomplish a long-term goal such as earning a degree.

Establish a Work and Life Balance
Being a workaholic can be damaging to your health and personal relationships. A work and life balance needs to be established very early on. As a student, start healthy habits now that’ll set you up for success and happiness in the future. Reduce your stress by spending time with family and friends or taking time to enjoy your hobbies.

Build your Network
A reliable network takes time to build, but professional connections can be made almost anywhere. Establish strong connections with your classmates, instructors, and work colleagues. Often times, networking opportunities can happen when you least expect it. People you meet at the grocery store, hair salon, or dental office could make a valuable addition to your professional network. Who and where you network can all depend on your career goals. For example, if you want to be a massage therapist, then the next time you visit the spa, strike up a conversation with the staff. You never know when you’ll meet someone who can make a difference in your career. Don’t be afraid to chat with strangers, but keep it casual and social. If your interactions are all business, you could rub people the wrong way. Try using a professional networking website like LinkedIn where you can connect with others online.
