A Lifetime of Assistance: Explore Career Services with Director Will McCoy
Will McCoy has spent the last decade of his life at Charter College with the goal of upholding Charter’s student-driven mission: “We Work to Get You to Work.” Starting as a Career Services Officer, Will worked his way up to become the Director of Career Services. He’s passionate about helping students succeed in their chosen fields, and he’s made it his own mission to provide lifelong career support tailored to each graduate’s unique path.
Under Will’s leadership of his dedicated teams, Career Services has evolved into a student-centered powerhouse focused on personalized growth.
“No student is the same,” Will says. “We focus more on the student versus the process and that’s how we all succeed.”
The Three Teams of Career Services
Charter’s Career Services Department can be broken down into three specialized teams with specific functions. Each group is tailored to address specific needs throughout a student’s career journey, and they all work together to ensure that our Charter Types—students who embody Charter College—have long-term success throughout their careers. Those teams include:
- Student Clinical Coordination: works closely with instructors to place students in externships and at clinical sites that often lead to employment.
- Clinical Site Recruiters: focuses on hands-on healthcare degree programs like Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) and Radiologic Technology (Rad Tech) and helps secure clinical sites while advocating for long-term extern and hiring partnerships.
- Student Employment Recruiting: works directly with students to prepare resumes, conduct mock interviews, provide tips on professionalism, and connect them with employers.
When a student begins their Charter College journey, Career Services are available to help prepare them for what’s ahead.
“We encourage students to work with their Career Services Officer early and often,” Will says. “By building that relationship, the likelihood that you’ll get hired is so much more.”
Will’s teams are always in constant contact with employers, advocating for students and creating strong community ties.
“We want to be the leader in our communities when it comes to providing quality candidates,” Will explains. “Some employers come to us first every time they have an opening because they know what kind of students we have.”
Career Services Provides Resume and Interview Support
One of the key areas of support Career Services provides is mock interview practice. Students receive frequently asked questions for interviews and are encouraged to develop what McCoy calls “Three Dragon Slayer Stories,” or impactful stories from their work history or education that shows their determination, resourcefulness, and other qualities the employer may want. Mock interviews are then conducted either in person or virtually, followed by personalized feedback and continued coaching.
Another primary resource for students is resume support. Templates are provided to simplify the process, and make sure important information is present to employers.
Career Services Coordinates Externships
Once you’ve earned your experience in the classroom, it’s time for you to get field experience, and career services is there to help you get connected with the right employer. With help from your instructors, the extern team finds sites that align with your interests and career path, so you get additional training in the area that interests you. For example, if you are a Medical Assistant student and you love to work with kids, career services may work to get you an externship opportunity at a pediatric setting.
Career Services Assists Diagnostic Imaging Students
The same goes for students in advanced DMS and Rad Tech degree program students. Career services checks for clinics in the area that utilize imaging technology and works to develop partnerships. From there, the partner helps you get placed and trained in those facilities.
And that support doesn’t end at graduation.
A Lifetime Commitment from Career Services
Career Services is determined to always assist Charter College students with their job search, whether they are a recent graduate, or if they graduated decades ago.
“One thing we always tell our students is that this isn’t just a one-time service,” McCoy says. “This is a lifetime commitment.”
Every success story shared fuels the team’s passion. Will regularly talks about stories in his leadership meetings as inspiration and motivation to show the team that their hard work continues to pay off.
