Analisha Postma: Choosing a New Path as a Medical Assistant
Have you ever felt as if you were at a fork in the road and didn’t know which way to go? After eight years in retail management in what she considered a dead-end job, Analisha Postma was ready for a change. But she had no idea what that meant. She took a temporary job in housekeeping at a local operating room and all of a sudden, she was thinking about a new career. The healthcare environment piqued her interest in a whole new line of work. Maybe she could work in medicine! After doing some research, she discovered Charter College and its Medical Assistant program, and thought this could be just the change she needed.
Why Charter College for Medical Assisting?
Analisha says she was initially drawn to Charter because the Vancouver campus was close to home and the program length was just 10 months.
“I considered other programs and different schools, but I wanted to get started right away and Charter’s program seemed like the best option,” Analisha explains. “And then I fell in love with it.”
Despite a passionate start, Analisha was concerned about how she would balance full-time work and evening classes, early mornings and late nights. At times, she felt overwhelmed, but she says the combined support of her family and everyone at Charter College kept her motivated to push forward toward her goals.
“There were times I didn’t want to go to class because I was so tired,” says Analisha. “But the experience at Charter was so great that it was just easy to keep going.”
Analisha says the staff made her feel welcome from her first tour to her first class. Everyone was accommodating and supportive. Analisha really loved how hands-on the lessons were in her coursework as she learned how to conduct blood draws, take vitals, and interact with patients. She says she especially liked how her instructor, Charolotte Nibler, could pull examples from her 36 years of experience as a Medical Assistant. Now Analisha uses those lessons in her own career.
“Charlotte taught us to be prepared for real world situations, and that the job is different from the classroom,” Analisha says. “She also taught us about her own mistakes, so we wouldn’t make them.”
Preparation for a Career as a Medical Assistant
Her training and externship and lessons in professionalism gave Analisha the tools to go out in the world and get a job as a Medical Assistant. All her hard work paid off as Analisha now works as a Medical Assistant at Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery. There, she helps patients undergoing hip and knee procedures and replacements.
“When a patient comes in, I can let them know that I’ve worked with different specialties, and I can explain things to them based on my first-hand experience through Charter,” says Analisha.
Analisha brings experience and value to the practice and her patients, and she loves what she does. She says, for now, she’s staying put as a Medical Assistant, but down the road, who knows? Maybe she’ll go back to school again. She’d like to be a Registered Nurse someday. Analisha says that the education and experience she got at Charter College has prepared her for whatever path she decides to take.
